Here at Burton Radio, we love shining a spotlight on the incredible talent brewing right here in our community. And this time, we've had the pleasure of catching up with two phenomenal local artists, Terrianne and Dorothy Ella, who are not only making waves with their individual music but are also teaming up for some exciting upcoming projects, including a unique busking tour!
Terrianne describes her music as "gritty powerhouse pop music," with a clear and powerful mission: "To empower women. That's my main aim with my music." This passion and drive are evident in her voice and her commitment to creating meaningful songs.
Her connection with fellow musician Dorothy Ella blossomed in a rather modern way. As Dorothy Ella explains, "We had a lesson and met online. You’re a singing teacher, right?" Terrianne confirms, "Yeah. I run a business called Singing for Sanity, which is about singing lessons for mental health..." This initial connection over a shared love of music and well-being has clearly grown into a strong artistic partnership.
While their collaboration wasn't initially planned as a busking tour, Terrianne shared, "We were going to do some gig swaps, but it just wasn’t working out—dates and stuff like that." But from those initial ideas, something even more exciting began to take shape.
The prospect of busking together clearly resonates deeply with both artists. Dorothy Ella expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "I've always been a bit scared to do it on my own. It is scary. That’s why I’m so excited to do it together." This shared experience promises to be both a musical adventure and a source of mutual support.
Terrianne also touched upon some of the understandable anxieties that can come with busking, particularly as a female artist: "What makes it scary? I think, for me, also as a woman, it's a bit vulnerable. You've got all your equipment with you—so much equipment. The cash is there, and you do get people coming up to you. I mean, most of the time it's a great experience, but you do have moments where you feel a bit unsafe, right?" Their decision to tackle this together speaks volumes about their camaraderie and shared vision.
Despite the potential challenges, the appeal of busking is undeniable for Dorothy Ella: "I love it because it's accessible to everyone. It’s free for anyone to come and see us. We’re spreading music in all these different places." This desire to connect with a wider audience and bring music directly to the streets is a driving force behind their upcoming tour.
Terrianne echoed this sentiment, highlighting the simple joy that live street music can bring: "The amount of times I’ve been walking down a street and there’s been a musician playing—it’s just put a smile on my face. If we can do that for other people, I think that's really powerful." Their aim is not just to perform but to create those little moments of joy and connection for passersby.
And even if the crowds are thin at times, the experience itself promises to be rewarding for the duo. As Dorothy Ella wisely put it, "If no one turns up, we're still going to have a great time together and listen to each other’s music, so it's a bonus for us as well." This positive attitude and focus on the shared musical experience is truly inspiring.
Adding an exciting and inclusive element to their busking plans, Terrianne revealed, "We're also going to put it out there for anyone to come and join us—any artists who want to get on the mic." This open invitation to other performers showcases their supportive nature and desire to foster a vibrant local music scene.
Their busking adventure is even set to be documented by Luke Brennan! Terrianne explained Brennan’s concept: "Nobody cares until everybody cares, right? Someone sent me this song about a busker—no one was listening, everyone just walking past not caring. Then one person stopped, then another joined, and suddenly there was a crowd. That’s when people start expressing that they like it." This documentary promises to offer a fascinating glimpse into the realities and rewards of street performance.
Both artists also recognise the crucial role of social media in today's music landscape. Terrianne emphasised, "It’s so powerful and important for artists to keep going with it, even when it’s tough," highlighting its role in connecting with fans and sharing their journey.
Terrianne passionately spoke about the unifying power of shared musical experiences: "In that moment, everyone is just in the music, singing together. A whole crowd of people—there’s no way they all agree on everything, but in that moment, they’re together, getting on. It’s the most beautiful thing."
The response to their upcoming busking tour has been so enthusiastic that Dorothy Ella joked, "We’re going to have to extend this tour at this rate—but it’s really cool!" This unexpected demand is a testament to the anticipation surrounding their collaboration.
And for our local listeners, Dorothy Ella has a special message: "I'm expecting Burton to be extra special, just because we've been speaking about it so much on Burton Radio." We certainly hope so too!
Terrianne’s journey as a musician took her to London to study at BIMM, where she recalled, "I just stayed there because I loved it, and I met so many musicians." However, her local roots remain important, as she added, "I do try and come back as much as I can—trains are expensive, though." This connection to home makes their upcoming performances even more meaningful.
Looking back at their journey together, Dorothy Ella recalled a significant joint gig: "It was sold out—what, 400, 500 people there? It was such an amazing experience for us both. That was when we were like, ‘Let’s do something together." This shared success clearly solidified their desire to collaborate further.
Terrianne sees their current projects as a natural progression, stating, "I think it’s just a perfect full-circle moment from last year. Someone saw us both perform and thought, ‘Dream team." This confidence and excitement for their partnership is infectious.
With so much on the horizon, Terrianne summed up their outlook perfectly: "This year is going to be amazing." We couldn't agree more!
